The definition of racism has changed dramatically over time. In the early and mid 1900s, there was a simple difference between people, the color of their skin. People used differences to make themselves feel superior. Although it is for other reasons then skin color; today differences are still used to make people more confident in themselves. They basically rely on the misery of others to make themselves feel better. But who is "they"? Does anyone know this question?

In today's society, it is not what people look like that causes separation. The social standards of society are what draw lines between people. People associate stereotypes with these standards. This is another contributing factor to a separtation of races. For example, in today's hit music many of the rap songs happen to be African American artists. This happens to cause a stereotype in people's minds because there is a race majority.

Although there is separation and race relations can be an issue, in my daily life there are minimal complications. I can't help but see an improvement in race relations. At a normal day at school there is a massive amount of interracial dating and after talking to my grandmother, this would not have been acceptable. The younger kids are getting the more races are intermingling. This is all very positive. Another thing I notice on a daily basis is the mingling with in a race. This is neither a good or bad thing. When you see groups of people of the same decent, they act similar and go either up or down to the level of those people. (This does not only pertain to race it can also go along with intelligence). Also I personally think it is a level of comfort that people have around people of the same ethnicity. For example, (this is obvious) but if someone was with a family the spoke a different language, they would be afraid to talk and say the wrong thing in that language.

These are just a few examples of today's relations, but overall I think races are becoming closer in general because of things such as public school, and all of the freedom in the United States.
